This Music Theory course is part 2 of a 3-part series.  The course is self-paced, so if you are already proficient, you should be able to move through the course fairly quickly to demonstrate mastery.  If you are new to music theory, you can take your time ot learn and build each skill as you go. Before beginning this course, you should be able to demonstrate mastery of the concepts from course 1: Music Fundamentals

  • Identify note names on each of the 4 primary clefs (Treble, Bass, Alto, and Tenor)
  • Identify and undersand rhythm and meter (simple and compound)
  • Identify and construct intervals (size and quality)
  • Identify and construct the 30 major and minor scales and key signatures

At the successful completion of this course (level 2), you will demonstrate proficiency in each of the following areas:

  • Identify and construct triads and seventh chords by root and type/quality.
  • Analyze music using lead sheet symbols.
  • Analyze diatonic, tonal music using Roman numerals.
  • Understand common uses of chords in a variety of musical textures and contexts.
  • Understand and perform melodic and harmonic analysis.
  • Compose music with root-position triads that follow functional tonal progressions.
